Subject: Testing modified hull configuration
Nearly everyone who has been deeply involved
with a project has done it: you wake up in the morning, or the
middle of the night, with an idea that might improve the project.
Sometimes these ideas work and sometimes they don’t. In my
case, the idea came while running a PE-20 in some very nasty seas
off Ocean City, MD. Unfortunately, I can’t describe any technical
details of the idea due to the likelihood of a patent pending soon.
When we tested the idea (actually a combination
of minor changes to angles and shapes) here in the Keys, the results
stunned us. We ran upwind and downwind, across wakes from large
cruisers and anything else we could think of. Always with the same
result, the boat was performing at a level that we had never experienced
on any small boat, ever. After some high fives and yelling into
the wind, we stopped the boat and got serious. “Is this
thing really this good, how can we describe this performance, what’s
the best way to get this message out to our type of customer (fishing
guides and middle age guys with advanced boating/fishing skills)
so that he will believe it enough to take a test drive????
Since our home waters of Lake Erie are frozen,
we decided to try to get as many guys as possible here in the Keys,
to “come on out with me, run the boat hard and give us your
thoughts”.
The responses were stunning. To a man, nearly
everyone was hard pressed to categorize the boat, so they said
things like: it’s better than a "__________" cat, even though
the "_________" cat is six feet longer and twice the price. But
the comments when they first opened the throttle in choppy water
were the most satisfying. They ranged from the reverent to the
profane:
- Oh my God, I’ve never seen
anything run like this in our kind of chop”
- “Dear Lord, this is amazing”
- “Unreal”
- “Ya’ alls
got the damndest little boat ah ever seen”
- “Can’t
believe it. This would run away from my Cabo 21”
- and my personal favorite, reverently
whispered to no one in particular, and overheard because we were
standing shoulder to shoulder behind the console…..“Oh…..my…..sweet…..Jesus”
In the “Port
Erie Challenge” link on this site, I make the case that the
PE 20 is the best boat in its class. And after many people test
driving it, no one has ever said that they thought I was wrong,
because "_______" is actually a better cat. Everyone
has said that it was the best small boat that they had ever been
on. Now, how do we compare the new 2007 model to the rest of the
boats in class? The new, modified boat is better than the 2006
model by about the same factor as the old one was to the rest of
the industry. We still can’t think of a clever new name for
it, or even a catchy marketing phrase ie; leaps tall waves in a
single bound. All we can do is post the new photos seen on the “New
2007 Model” page and try to get you out for a test.
We are a small family owned company that
builds world class boats. We try not to look and sound like the
big builders, especially when it comes to unfounded self promotion.
So if the above is a little over the top, mark it up to enthusiasm
and give us a call to arrange a test ride. I guarantee, that if
you run our boat under any condition from choppy to very rough,
you will come away with the understanding that there is no other
boat to which you can compare the PE-20, until you get above about
twenty six feet and even then a lot of those boats will struggle
to keep up when conditions get bad.
For a test ride in the Mid-Atlantic area
contact Don at M & M Boat Sales in Baltimore, MD. These guys
are the real deal, they have been handling cats for a along time.
Click the “Contact Us” link from our home page for
their phone number.
For folks farther south, call Terry Olsen
in our office to arrange a test. And for you Great Lakes fishermen,
you know the drill, as soon as the Lake thaws out, we will get
you out on the water from the factory location in Erie, PA.
Thanks for reading all this stuff.
